Please share a story that includes a happy memory as an artist and has hugely impacted your artistry.
Last month, I put on my first independent art installation using a collaborative grant I received from NYU Tisch. The project was called “SHUT THE F*** UP, NYC!!!” and is a close observation of the various publicly-funded and privately-funded parks in New York City, and how noise pollution has affected each individual landscape. The week leading up to the event was extremely stressful. I was also packing and moving apartments because my lease was ending at the same time. However, I remember very clearly on the day of the exhibit, when our team and I had finished setting up, and feeling overjoyed by how everything had turned out. The installation was better than I had even imagined it and seeing it all come together makes me want to continue working on interdisciplinary experiential installations.
How do you choose to lead a Happy Healthy life as an artist?
When I wake up every morning, I choose to spread joy to the people around me. As a very extroverted and sociable person, I find my energy and happiness from the happiness of those around me. I always practice listening to others, allowing them to feel accepted and loved, and in turn, that feeds both my happiness and my artistry. Observing and listening to the people around me plays a large role in the way I approach my art.
Who did you learn from to instill those values?
To be honest, I was also once very pessimistic. It’s easy to see all the terrible things going on in the world but I realized that spreading negativity doesn’t benefit anyone. So instead, I try to spread positivity and optimism to those around me, in hopes that they will reflect it back at me (and they usually do).
Was it hard work to make sure that you focused on your well-being and not only your art?
YES, all the time! I always say that my life is my art, and my art is my life. They are equally important to me, but it’s still very difficult for me to make time for my art and that’s something I’m currently working on.
Was there a turning point in how you decided to put yourself first?
I got to a point where I realized that if I didn’t put myself first, nobody would. I owe it to myself to put myself first because even if I’m the only one that can treat myself the best! :)
How do you like to promote a healthy lifestyle?
Every morning, I have a morning routine that I do to start my day. I wake up after I wake up around 8 AM, brush my teeth, wash my face and make masala chai, I’ll do a 10-minute workout, followed by yoga and a guided meditation with Raveena’s “Let Your Breath Become a Flower”. Throughout the day, I take breaks when I’m feeling less focused and will go for a walk outside, read a book or listen to music to rest and recharge.
Is there a song, book, movie, show, or anything that always gives you the motivation you need?
During spring break, I read a book by Haemin Sunim, a Zen buddhist teacher, titled "The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down”. I use this book for meditation, reflection and inspiration, especially when I feel like I’m lacking in motivation or creativity. The book contains dozens of short poems and calming illustrations that emphasizes the importance of forging a deeper connection with ourselves, others and the world around us.
