The Most Challenging "Yes!" for KENDI FINESTEAD

Where are you from and how did you get started?

I was born in Detroit, MI, and moved to Texas at age 4! I like to say I was "Motown born and cowtown raised." My songs are mostly Texas country/Americana with some heavy Motown/blues influence.

How do you manage your self-care as an artist?

It can definitely be a struggle. I am also a mom of 3! I try to take days off from music to take care of my voice. Mondays and Tuesdays are my rest days. The kids are back in school now, so I try to rest while they're gone and focus on quality family time when they're home.

What is challenging with wellness and/ or mental health as a musical artist?

I think it's really easy to say "yes" to new projects just because they're so fun, so intentionally making time to rest can be difficult

Managing highs and lows is another thing. As an artist, you might have a great weekend of shows with great responses from the crowd, but then the next week you could be dealing with rejection from other venues/projects. You learn not to take these things too personally, enjoy the high moments, and be kind to yourself through the lows.

Do you have new releases or upcoming shows you would like to share?

I do! I've been booking more full band shows lately which is really exciting. You can catch me at The Rodeo Stage at The Stockyards in Fort Worth over the next couple of months.

My latest release, called "Your Eyes are Lyin'" made it to number 11 on the Texas Internet Radio chart, and it even placed on the Texas Country Music chart as well! I really love the production on this one and I'm proud of how it turned out. Let me know if you can hear the Motown/Blues influence!

Tell us about your mission as an artist!

I just really want to be a great example for my kids. I want them to chase their dreams and pursue what makes them happy, so I have to do that for myself. I also have such a huge heart for women in this industry. I'm really proud to be a part of this community. I host a spotlight for other female songwriters and just try to promote the idea that there's room for everyone at the top and we don't have to be each others' competition.
