Sami Dimouro on Staying Healthy as an Artist!

Where are you from and how did you get started?

I am from the Berkshires in Massachusetts! It's a rural county on the border of upstate NY. As a child, I was glued to my sister's piano and learned to play the violin. I wrote a lot of poetry.

I went to college north of Boston, studying journalism & photography. It was great, but I started really craving more freedom and creativity, which eventually led me to writing music! Now I live in LA and pursue music full time. I still do a little graphic design on the side!

How do you manage your self-care as an artist?

It's tough, especially coming out of a pandemic. My needs have definitely shifted. I work a lot less hours to avoid burnout, so now I manage my time the way that feels best for me, and really just getting to experience excess free time where I otherwise wouldn't have been able to.

What is challenging with wellness and/ or mental health as a musical artist?

Again, things are super different post-pandemic. I used to struggle with being spread too thin. Now I have a lot more free time. I still struggle with getting overwhelmed by my creative process. I have a condition called synesthesia, so I can get hit really hard with sensory input / ideas when I hear music.

I've also learned to feel comfortable on days that feel less "productive" and prioritize my rest time so I can recharge my creative battery.

Do you have new releases or upcoming shows you would like to share? I have a song coming out this Friday, August 20th called "Mastering Disaster," with a music video dropping soon after! I do all my photography, editing, graphic design and most of my videography. It was a really fun project. I love screenwriting and attaching a story to my songs like a mini movie.

Tell us about your mission as an artist!

I think being able to write about subjects that can be dark, sad, or difficult, and acknowledging the low points in life, but being able to bring it full circle is really important to me. Always being able to spin it in a positive or encouraging light.
