Please share a story that includes a happy memory as an artist and has hugely impacted your artistry.
My first Boston show! I opened up for Brothers McCann at Lizard Lounge in 2019. This was the first time I was playing guitar live, singing and playing at the same time, AND playing an original song. I was absolutely terrified because it was all so new. Plus, I have anxiety so that obviously didn’t help. But when I made my way to the stage, I saw ALL of my friends in the audience. Friends from college, friends from work, friends from volunteer organizations. The room was packed. After my set, I started sobbing trying to thank everyone. It’s overwhelming to realize and visually see how many people supported me and my dream. Everyone believed in me, even when I wasn’t fully there yet.
How do you choose to lead a Happy Healthy life as an artist?
Balance. I’m a Libra- the scales, baby! I really try to break when I need a break, and play when I wanna play. This may sound a bit silly, but I feel like artists feel compelled to constantly write, play, perform, etc. especially with TikTok to keep up with everyone else and keep attention on them. But at the end of the day, the person I’m doing this for is myself. If I’m not enjoying it or feel burnt out, it’s gonna show in my music, videos, and performances, and that’s not fun. So, really just listening to myself and focusing in on what I want to play, what I want to write about, and what means the most to me.
Who did you learn from to instill those values?
John Mayer is one of my biggest influences. I’ve been a fan since I was 12. Throughout the years, you can see how his sound has changed and I think it’s reflective of what he enjoys in the moment. A lot of music now has a bunch of long guitar solos, which I don’t think some people enjoy but you can tell he is having a blast. He plays for himself, and it’s inspiring. (He’s never actually said this I think but this is what I assume in my own head???)
Was it hard work to make sure that you focused on your well-being and not only your art?
It was and still is. I talk about balance and listening to my body/mind when it needs a break, but there’s a little voice in the back of your head that annoys the hell out of you. I just took a break from tiktok for a bit because it was just too much recently. I’m trying to get back up and post videos, but damn. You can tell the algorithm isn’t pushing your stuff out since you’ve been inactive. It’s tough, but I’m in a better mindset now to get back into it now that I’ve given myself room to relax.
Was there a turning point in how you decided to put yourself first?
Probably finally getting on meds after YEARS of anxiety and trying to deal with it on my own (lol). Don’t be afraid to speak to your doctor y’all.
How do you like to promote a healthy lifestyle?
Honestly just chatting with other artists about the issues I face or stress about and getting their feedback. It’s nice to talk to people dealing with the same stuff and share ways we cope with the stress.
In what ways are you connecting with fans to check in on each other?
I’m a very active extrovert on social media. I rarely answer a text on time but I’m always on Instagram. Something about being able to talk to a bunch of people at once is really fun for me. I always put out polls, questions, etc. to get feedback from people. Even if it’s not an artist, someone has a way they can relate and share their own story.
Who checks in on YOU when you need it most?
My dog, Hugo. He’s a 12-year-old Bichon-Poodle. He was my partner’s family’s dog, and he came to live with us in the city 4 years ago. This dude ALWAYS knows when I’m sad, panicked, or on the verge of an anxiety attack. This sweet boy always just comes up next to me, licks my leg, and cuddles next to me. I’m obsessed with him. We don’t deserve dogs.
Changing habits can be hard. Which was the habit that you had to change and how has it changed your life now?
When I first started seriously writing music, I needed to stop the debilitating overthinking issue I dealt with all my life. I would write or even just feel something, and be too afraid to share it with anyone. I really wanted to keep up this façade of being okay. But sharing these parts of yourself in such a vulnerable way can be really empowering. And when you start to chip away at this idea that you will be judged, shunned, etc. about the music you write, you allow people/fans in and it really changes your life. I love sharing my deep songs with people, and then having them come up after a show to talk about how much they relate. It’s incredible putting words to a feeling so many can relate to.
Is there a song, book, movie, show, or anything that always gives you the motivation you need?
This changes every so often, but right now “Ur Mum” by Wetlag just pumps me up and makes me feel like I can conquer the world. Honestly it has nothing to do with the lyrics and everything to do with the general vibe of the song. It’s so badass.
What is the mantra of 2022?!
The smallest victories can lead to the biggest accomplishments. Just take it one step at a time.
Give all the inside scoop on your latest project!
OOOO YAH! I have a song coming out in June with a friend of mine. It’s an indie folk tune and has some of my favorite writing I’ve ever done. I’m excited for you to hear it.
I ALSO have another song coming out around September, called Acquaintances. This will also be my first music video if all goes well :’). I just got the final mix and I’ve been playing it non-stop. Probably my favorite song so far, and it means a lot to me.
