Canadian-born, Nashville-based pop singer-songwriter and “powerhouse vocalist” (Rolling Stone) Liv Charette grew up with big Olympic dreams. A former figure skater, she spent 11 years on the ice before discovering her passion for singing. After the first time she sang in front of a crowd, she traded her skates in for a microphone. Liv’s viral success on TikTok with her Tiny Mic series “One Word Song Challenge” landed her in a feature on New York Magazine’s The Strategist. Her new weekly podcast “She’s on the List” features Liv’s takes on style, beauty, history, travel, cocktail culture, and much more.
Please share a story that includes a happy memory as an artist and has hugely impacted your artistry.
One of my happiest memories as an artist was getting to play at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in honor of Tina Turner’s induction a few months ago. I grew up idolizing Tina and her effortless ability to sing and entertain an audience with such energy and charisma. It was truly a dream come true to be able to cover and release one of her songs called “I Don’t Wanna Fight” and of course, be asked by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to perform it. I’m still pinching myself! How do you choose to lead a Happy Healthy life as an artist?
For me, leading a Happy Healthy life as an artist is sticking to a routine that is both manageable and realistic and that finds a balance between work, fitness and healthy eating. I know that in order to show up and be at my best in what I do, I need to prioritize fitness and make time in my schedule to prepare meals ahead of time so that I can make good food choices. Rest and listening to my body is also super important. Who did you learn from to instill those values?
I’ve always led a very active lifestyle. I was a competitive figure skater from the age of 3 to 14, as well as a platform diver for several years. I grew up with coaches, personal trainers, and don’t ever remember a time where fitness wasn’t a key part of my day. My parents always believed that fitness was so important, not just for your body, but for your mental health. As far as healthy eating goes, my mom is an amazing cook and I was super fortunate to have delicious, nutritious meals growing up. She taught me how to cook healthy meals and I still call her to this day for recipes and tips! Was it hard work to make sure that you focused on your well-being and not only your art?
Definitely! I’m a workaholic and in the past, I would sometimes put off fitness in order to be able to get more done in a day. I think I have come to realize that if I don’t workout in the mornings, it’s probably not going to happen that day (haha!), so I try to get up earlier and go to bed earlier so that I don’t have an excuse to not go to the gym. Was there a turning point in how you decided to put yourself first?
I think I just realized that my gym and clean eating routine IS part of my art and my work, because it allows me to be at my best, both physically and mentally — they go hand-in-hand. How do you like to promote a healthy lifestyle?
My followers on social media know that I’m a huge Peloton fan, so seeing regular Peloton workout posts is no surprise to them! Haha. But as far as promoting it in my own life, I try to make leading a healthy lifestyle fun, whether it’s inviting a friend over to my gym to work out together, going on a hike to catch up, cooking a meal together or checking out a new healthy restaurant in Nashville. In what ways are you connecting with fans to check in on each other?
I’ve always believed in being authentic online because at the end of the day, we are all humans — not everyday is going to be the best day, but knowing someone could be going through something similar as someone else is comforting and social media has given us a platform to be able to connect with one another and offer words of encouragement. I like to think I’m a positive person and I like my social media to reflect that — I want to be a safe place for people online and I hope my posts make people smile and feel uplifted in some way. Who checks in on YOU when you need it most?
I’m fortunate to have an incredible circle of close family and friends who are like family that know me (probably better than I know myself, haha) and are always there to listen. Changing habits can be hard. Which was the habit that you had to change and how has it changed your life now?
A habit I’ve tried to change is knowing when to “turn off” for the day — to turn off work, turn off my phone, etc. The immediacy of society today can be very overwhelming and I’ve come to realize that unless there is an important deadline, most things can wait until the next morning. It’s important to have time to shut off your brain before bed, so that you can wake up refreshed and ready to take on the next day. Is there a song, book, movie, show, or anything that always gives you the motivation you need?
We all have our guilty pleasures… and for me, that’s reality TV! Put on an episode of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Orange County or New Jersey and I’m instantly relaxed. As an artist, I am thinking about music 24/7, so I like to dive into things that don’t make me think of work and there couldn’t be anything further from it than some housewives flipping tables on TV (lol!). I’m also a huge podcast fan and recently started my own podcast called “She’s on the List”! It’s a podcast about beauty, lifestyle, society and culture and I’ve been having so much fun recording it and digging deeper into topics that inspire me. What is the mantra of 2022?!
My mantra for 2022 is “why not?”. Why not start a podcast? Why not say this in a song? Why not ask for something I really want? I mean, if someone’s going to do it, why not me? Give all the inside scoop on your latest project!
So. Much. New. Music!!! I recently dropped a new single called “Game Over” and I must admit, it’s one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written. It’s about taking back your power in a relationship and realizing you deserve so much more — saying that you’re done being played by a player, you’re the winner in this… and it’s game over for them.
